Rachel wins the crown

By Laura Kavanagh A local beauty therapist has been newly crowned Miss Universe New Zealand. Kapiti based Rachel Millns took out the competition held at Sky City in Auckland on September 18, and her work colleagues at Absolute Bliss are absolutely thrilled for her. Owner Donna Williams says they are very excited for her. “We are absolutely rapt for her…we feel very proud,” Donna says. Twenty-four year old Rachel says it was a special shock to find out she was the winner. This is Rachel’s sixth pageant, starting with Miss Kapiti in 2010, where she was named Miss Friendship. Rachel also reached the top five of Miss Universe New Zealand last year, and travelled to Thailand where the top 25 battled it out. Continued on page 2

Wellington butchery scoops prestigious award By Dan Whitfield Cameron Harrison Butchery has sliced through its competition to beat more than 60 other outlets from around New Zealand, taking home the top prize – Ham of the Year. The butchery, owned and operated by Rob Cameron and Simon Harrison, entered the 100% New Zealand Bacon & Ham Competition 2014 with their own manuka smoked, honey cured bone-in ham. According to judges it was a standout entry at the annual awards, and the duo also cleaned out the other categories, winning gold for its bonein and bone-less ham entries. With 20 years working as a butcher under his belt, Rob is ecstatic about the win. “I’m stoked…It’s great to know that all the hard work we have put in over the years has paid off,” Rob says. Cameron Harrison Butchery has two retail stores located in the Wellington suburbs of Kelburn and Ngaio, with the product produced at a factory in Wainuiomata.

Rob says the company is one of the most consistent entrants in the competition, taking part for three out of four years. Over the years, the butchery has won three gold awards, one silver and two supreme awards – one of which was as a producer for the Nosh Food Market winning ham. Competition judges singled

Dyslexic student inspires A Scots College student is using his own experience of dyslexia to inspire other young people who struggle with the disorder. Matt Strawbridge from Karori started his own website ‘dyslexia potential’ and runs empowerment workshops for young people with dyslexia. He started the website when he was in year 9 because he was keen to help other young people. “I don’t want any other kid to feel the way I did…a lack of confidence,” Matt says “It can be frustrating because you have the ideas but can’t put them down – you are not slow or stupid – your brain just works differently.” Matt says his role model is Sir Richard Branson, who also has dyslexia, who invited Matt onstage at a conference.

“He discussed growing up with dyslexia and shared stories with me. He congratulated me on my efforts to help others and said he would do what he could to help me,” Matt says. Matt now has over 2000 dyslexic kids and parents following the work he does, and held a recent empowerment event at Miramar North School. “My courses are designed to motivate and inspire dyslexic kids as well as to show them lots of strategies for making the most of their dyslexia,” Matt says. He says he is always overwhelmed with the response he gets from the courses and the number of kids and parents who are reaching out for help and support. “There is a big need out in the community for support for dyslexia.” Matt admits he still struggles with spelling but says despite this, he achieves Excellence

ALL GLASS & GLAZING grades in English. “It frustrates me a bit when people try to fix the problem of dyslexia.” “You need to look at it positively – it is not a problem because other parts of the brain are stronger.”  To visit Matt’s website, go to www.dyslexiapotential.com INSPIRATION: Matt Strawbridge from Karori was determined not to let himself be defined by his dyslexia.

Robby and team members Michael Pearson, Alex Campbell, Mayur Panchal, Henry Williams, and Ryan Wolstenholme have been working on their robot for several months. They have had to achieve five milestones during the year, which tested different aspects of the robot’s capability. Robby says while having the experience from last year has certainly helped, the team has had a couple of major challenges along the way. “We wanted to have a really fast robot so we chose very high power motors but they proved to be more difficult to control electronically than we had anticipated,” Robby says. “Solving the problems created by the more complex design was a nightmare but after seeing the test results we're happy that we went the extra mile.” The theme for this year’s competition was agriculture with the robots competing in farming inspired challenges including collecting seeds and depositing them in the planting area and navigating through faming obstacles. The competition final was held on Thursday, September 25 at Macquarie University.

Pool upgrade on track

Eye on Crime

By Laura Kavanagh

Johnsonville Neighbourhood Watch

The upgrade to Keith Spry Pool in Johnsonville is certainly taking shape as the expected completion date nears closer. Over the last few weeks work has started on replacing the roof on the existing pool building and the main entry doors. Most of the windows for the new pools have been installed. Over the next month the new children’s pool is to be water tested and the tiles for the teaching pool will be installed. The walls and the roof for the new change rooms will also be installed, and the roof of the existing building will continue to be replaced.

In Johnsonville a lady attempting to reverse from her parking space in the Johnsonville Mall car park stopped to give way to another vehicle. While distracted with this manoeuvre a young man opened the passenger side door and snatched her shoulder bag from the passenger seat and ran off to a waiting car. The bag contained a wallet, bank cards, cash and a smart phone. This occurred at around 4 pm. In Newlands a green Suzuki hatchback parked in Kenmore Street was damaged when someone used a sharp implement to inflict scratches along all the passenger side panels. A house in Salford Street damaged in an attempt to burgle the property. A hole was smashed in a rear laundry window and by reaching through the door was unlocked. Fortunately this activated the alarm and the offender fled the scene. The Police have a description of the offender. An unsuccessful attempt was made to steal petrol from a blue Holden Monaro parked in the driveway of a house in Stewart Drive. A house left locked and secure in Cheltenham Terrace was entered although the method of entry is not yet known. A messy search was made and a new laptop computer and an Iphone and charger were stolen. In Khandallah a Flat in Narbada Crescent was broken into via a smashed glass in a wooden front door. A thorough search was made and electronic items and jewellery were stolen. A red Subaru Forester, with no alarm, parked on the street overnight was stolen. In Churton Park a forced aluminium window gave access to a house in Furlong Crescent. The alarm was activated and the offenders left the scene. It is not yet known if anything was stolen.

Keith Spry Pool is scheduled to remain closed until February 2015. During the closure period, Learn to Swim classes, Aqua Fit classes, Ezy Movers and Shallow Water have moved to Tawa pool. Deep water classes are available at Karori Pool and lane swimming is available at all other Wellington City Council pools. Aqua jogging is available at Karori pool, Freyberg pool and Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre.  For more information: www.wellington.govt.nz/ recreation/pools/swimmingpools/keith-spry-pool

Top musician at Newlands College By Laura Kavanagh A Newlands College student has taken home a string of accolades recently from

lin), first in jazz, and first in duets with Rebekah Tiongson. Fourteen year old Stella also came second in the piano solo grade seven and above at the competition held in Porirua in September. Stella says it was a surprise to do so well. “I have placed before but I was not expecting to come first in so many sections,” Stella says. Stella has been playing piano for a decade, starting with lessons at the age of five. “My dad wanted to buy me a PlayStation but Mum decided to get a piano,” Stella says. She says learning and playing music is very different to academic subjects. “It is much more emotional and interpretive,” Stella says. “It is not just about playing the notes as they are.” Stella has dabbled with a number of different instruments, but has not decided whether she will go on to study music at university. “I am not yet set on whether I will study maths or music,” Stella says.

The Wellington Cathedral is holding its own version of World of Wearable Arts with a display of Wearable Liturgical Art and other stitched cathedral treasures. Tying in with its 50th anniversary

the newly opened cathedral. Member of the Cathedral Linen Guild Margaret Cull says the idea came from the 50th celebrations. “We have such beautiful embroidery, linens and silks,” Margaret says. The pieces are grouped and include historical information alongside ‘about the wearer’. The collection even includes royal prayer books used by Queen Elizabeth the second and Prince Phillip, and the original altar linen description signed by everyone who worked on it. The Royal New Zealand Ballet loaned eight mannequins for the exhibition. Margaret says it is wonderful to be able to share these garments with the wider community, and viewers need to walk around the cathedral to fully appreciate them. Admission is free, Monday to Sunday till 4pm.

Memorial on the move – if family members interested By Dan Whitfield

HISTORY ON THE MOVE: Onslow Historical Society committee member Christine Paterson says it is important that the Trooper Retter memorial is looked after. PHOTO CREDIT: Dan Whitfield

The Onslow Historical Society has its eyes on relocating a memorial for Leonard Greenwood Retter back to its original location along the main road of Johnsonville. Yet, the group needs to first track down ancestors alive today as the hope is to include them in the process. Trooper Retter, who was part of an early settler family to the northern suburb, was killed in the Second South African War in February 1902 while serving as a farrier. His memorial, which includes a marble tablet, was planned and erected in about 1904 by a Johnson-

ville committee and the local town board. It was looked after by the RSA over the next few decades. A conservation plan put together by Elspeth Hocking in 2011 explained how the memorial was knocked over by a truck in 1953 and left in the gutter for seven weeks before care of it was handed over to the Wellington City Council. The plan also says the memorial was scheduled to be demolished but nothing eventuated; and was moved to Moorefield Rd where it stands today. Onslow Historical Society committee member Christine Paterson says the proposal to move the memorial comes from concerns that most peo-

ple have no idea about what it is – and because of regular vandalism. While there has already been interest shown by the other committee members, as well as deputy mayor and northern ward councillor Justin Lester, Christine says she would like to have the family and RSA involved. “Obviously it is important for us to have the family involved. We’re hoping to have members of the Retter family be part of the process…To have approval from them would also be great,” Christine says.  If anyone has information on members of the Retter family still living in Johnsonville or is an ancestor of Leonard themselves, contact president Murray Pillar on 473 3622.

Courtroom mystery heads to Khandallah Don Langridge of Karori is once again treading the boards with Khandallah Arts Theatre (KAT) in their October production of Witness for the Prosecution. In the latest KAT production, Witness for the Prosecution by Agatha Christie, Don plays the part of Mr Justice Wainwright; the judge. Witness for the Prosecution is based on Agatha Christie’s short story of the same name. When Miss Emily French is murdered, Leonard Vole employs a lawyer as he believes he will be arrested for her

murder. Don has always wanted to play the part of a judge ever since he was involved in writing the script and advising the production team for the film How to Murder Your Wife which was based on a true story about the murder of his neighbour in Karori. Don Langridge first acted in a KAT play in the 1970s play The Rivals when he was teaching at Raroa and has been a member ever since acting in numerous plays. He was attracted to the role of the judge as he has been

in several plays directed by Kathi George, most recently as an American in KAT’s sold-out production of Twelve Angry Men in 2006. This is his first time back on stage in five-six years and he is looking forward to it. K at h i G eorge d i re cte d KAT’s sold-out production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap in 2012 and this year teams up with Joy Hellyer to direct another popular Agatha Christie play Witness for the Prosecution. Agatha Christie’s plays are renowned for their twists and

turns and this play will keep its audiences on their toes. Witness for the Prosecution will be held at KAT, Cochran Ha l l, Ca sh mere Avenue School on Thursday 9, Saturday 11, Thursday 16, Friday 17 and Saturday 18 October at 7.30pm with a 4pm matinee on Sunday 12 October.  Tickets cost $18/$15 concession and can either be purchased from Khandallah Pharmacy, Ganges Road, Khandallah or you can book your tickets by phoning Margaret on 479 2436 or email katbookings@gmail.com

St Benedict’s School Spring Fair By Laura Kavanagh Preparation is in full swing at St Benedict’s School for its annual School Fair as excitement mounts for the fair’s special guests. Two players from the Wellington Saints basketball team will be at St Benedict’s School Fair on Sunday, October 19 giving budding basketballers a chance to shoot a few hoops with their idols. The players will also be available for photos and

signatures, and season passes to the Saints games will be up for grabs. The fair will feature many of its familiar attractions including toys, clothing, food and cake stalls, white elephant, auctions, books, raffles, Kidzone and Tombola activities. A Santa photo booth will also be a popular new addition to the fair. One of the organisers Rebecca Lythe says the fair is the school’s biggest fundraiser for the year and has become an institution.

“Planning started several months ago and its full steam ahead,” Rebecca says. She says they want to thank all the parents, teachers and the wider community supporting the fair. “We are hoping for a fine day but it will happen rain, hail or shine,” Rebecca says.

“Education should be a huge focus. There are too many kids that slip through the cracks. Some leave far too early and they don’t have the skills to get a job. I fully support performance pay. There are too many teachers coming in at 8:30am and leaving at 3pm on the dot when school finishes.”

“Our country is not competitive. Cost of living is extremely high. Electricity and insurance bills are so ridiculously overpriced these days. We can’t go on living like this. It’s unsustainable.”

“The government should focus on employment issues for the unemployed. The government should employ the unemployed to work for them. The Wellington roads need a lot of work so maybe the government can employ these people to work on this.”

“Probably increasing minimum wage because everything is going up and the current minimum wage is too low to cover cost of living.”

“The government needs to focus on education child poverty and unemployment. These are huge issues at the moment. Go John Key!”

Nick Janke Johnsonville “The government should distance itself from becoming a welfare state. They should focus on hand up, not a hand out. It’s a huge problem as it is taxpayer’s money and that money could be used for something more useful. We should be encouraging people to work for their money.”

A Victoria University of Wellington student has used a family connection as inspiration for an entry in this year’s World of Wearable (WoW) Arts show. In what started as a family project using his greatgrandfather’s tools, Troy Stade has created, alongside his parents Martin de Ruyter and Karen Stade, a Bizarre Bra entry. “My great-grandfather made trench art after World War II, which ignited a bit of a passion for my family. The garment is made up of shells from spent bullets which are split in half and then welded and filed to create a petal. “The petals are shaped like a poppy, which brings in a New Zealand connection,” says Troy, who is studying Law, Japanese and International Relations. Troy’s family, who are from Nelson, are longstanding supporters of WOW, having been to every show since the event began, and have tried to use this experience to help them put together an award-winning garment. “We’re aiming to be the first Supreme winner of the Bizarre Bra section,” says Troy. Although the former Nelson College student has been told he has “artists’ hands”, he doesn’t see himself as a particularly creative person. “Like every boy growing up I enjoyed playing with Lego, but other than some after-school art classes I haven’t done much.” But he can see how important it is for students to have a creative outlet, especially those studying law.

Food drive for needy locals By Laura Kavanagh Look through those shelves for baked beans, pasta, and canned fruit – a local food drive is collecting this October to help the most vulnerable in our community. Tracy Wellington from Kiwi Community Assistance and Michelle Harrison have teamed up to co-ordinate the food drive to help ‘Stock the Warehouse’ of Kiwi Community Assistance in Grenada North. Based in Tawa, Kiwi Community Assistance is run by volunteers and co-ordinates food rescues, recycles quality new and used clothing, furniture and whiteware, and is a distribution hub for charities and

food banks. Michelle came up with the idea of the food drive after watching the Nigel Latta series on TV and was horrified by the amount of poverty present in New Zealand. “I think sometimes you can feel like you live in a bubble but more and more middle class families are struggling to survive,” Michelle says. Tracy says poverty is a spiral that can affect anyone. “Imagine if you lost your job tomorrow…how long could your survive?” Tracy says. “Most of us could only survive two months.” She says the food drive will help restock their stores just in time for

Property Matters Checklist before you buy a house Before you buy a house, it is good to check for the following: 1. Piles or foundations There is a potential problem if it feels like you are walking uphill and downhill around the house, or if there is a genereal unevenness to the floor. Re-pilling costs can start at $12,000. 2. Wiring and electrics Look at the switchboard/fuse board – is it an old switchboard with black wiring and chunky white porcelain fuses? Is the electricity meter still a part of the switchboard panel? Re-wiring a home can cost between $4000 to $20,000 depending on the age and style of the home. 3. The interior wall linings Can you tell what is lining the walls? Worst case scenario it is Scrim (sacking or jute laid over rough sawn wooden boards (sarking)). Best case it is plasterboard (Gib board).

Darren Van Hoof, the Education Lead Ranger at the Karori Sanctuary says it is a great opportunity for children to explore and discover our nocturnal native animals. “It’s a unique experience to see our native animals in the dark.” Kiwis, tuataras, glow worms and wetas are some of the native animals people can see on this two and half hour trek in the bush. The overnight night tours attract schools from as far as Whanganui. Michael Fagg of Karori Rotary says it is marvellous to educate children about native animals. Zealandia’s CEO Hilary Beaton says the night tour is an exciting adventure. “It is a great to experience the wilderness at night,” Hilary says. She says amazing sounds can be identified at night by wetas, kiwis and other native birds and children on the tour are very attentive. “The noisiest children can be quiet on the night tour as there is a sense of awe around these animals.”

number one attraction on the night tour, being extremely rare and only found on Kapiti Island and the sanctuary itself. During the tour, people can also see glow worms in the old gold mines, wetas, tuataras and rare Maud Island frogs. Zealandia also offer overnight tours for schools from out of town during terms two and three. “You can see more native animals in half an hour during dawn than what you can see during the whole day,” Darren says. Karori Rotary Club has made the overnight tours possible for Zealandia, funding the mattresses the students use and trailers where the mattresses are stored.

People of all ages can have hearing problems. This usually means they have a greater than normal difficulty understanding what other people are saying. We will all have some difficulty occasionally, but people with impaired hearing have consistently more difficulty. It is important if you are noticing this for yourself, or if your child is having difficulty listening at school, to obtain a comprehensive Audiological assessment which will help you to take the best steps to reduce the problem. The right assessment will result in a full description of your hearing, including identifying any Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Make an appointment. You will feel better.

Young gymnast off to nationals By Laura Kavanagh A young talented Ngaio gymnast will be performing amongst the best this month heading off to the 2014 New Zealand National Gymsports Championships. Sarah Jennings will be joining other members of the gym club Big Air in Tawa as part of Twisters in the competition to be held in Auckland. This will be the first national competition for ten year old Sarah, who started gymnastics at the tender age of three. “I was good at climbing and was quite strong,” Sarah says. She will be competing both as a team and as an individual in step five of the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. The active Ngaio School student trains four days a week

and credits the great coaches from Big Air for motivating her to push herself. “The coaches push you to the limit and encourage you to try your hardest,” Sarah says. Sarah’s coaches include Cat Diamond, Carlie Riach and Rebecca Houlihan. Sarah also loves gymnastics because she gets to have fun as part of a team. Sarah’s parents are very proud of her and say training in gymnastics has been great for Sarah. “It has given her that selfbelief and motivation in herself, which helps her in other areas,” Sarah’s father Andrew says. Sarah is looking forward to the competition held in Auckland from October 8 to 11.

It has not been an easy season

for the team with absences and injuries prominent throughout but Aprille says everyone came together court fit for the tournament. “We all gelled together, we didn’t expect to do so well,” Aizaya says. Newlands won over New Plymouth's Sacred Heart and New Plymouth Girls', who both finished in the top 10. But they lost to overall winners Te Rito Manukura in the semifinals, and went down by 10 goals to Palmerston North in the playoff for third.
